Lahudood: Europe's Only BC Winner--in the Filly & Mare Turf
British-bred Filly Lahudood Toughs Out Some of the Best
The British press languished over George Washington's death and the 'whitewash' of the 12 European entries in the US Breeders' Cup. In the US, one would say wipe out.
They failed to note that four-year-old Luhudood (Singspiel) was a Shadwell UK homebred out of Rayayeh. She trained in France under Johnathan Pease until she was sent to Kiaren McLaughlin in The States. She easily won the Grade 1 prep Flower Bowl, but lost another race on soft ground.
Hence, McLaughlin expressed concern about the rain and soggy turf ground. Owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum wanted her to have her chance given that she had been effective in France on soft ground.
Despite the turf, Luhudood held on gamely once she hit the front and neither Honey Ryder USA (Lasting Approval) nor Passage of Time (Dansili) from Great Britain could overtake her in the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, Grade 1, of lm 3f.
This was the race where Simply Perfect (Danehill USA) ran out taking Precious Kitten USA (Catienus) and Arravale USA (Arch) with her.
Darley Stud was quick to capitalize on Luhudood's sire Singspiel with a charming full-page ad headed:
"That's cool, dood!"
After losing George Washington, we needed a bit of humour.
