Derby Oaks Festival 2009
Investec Sponsors Derby Festival
Epsom's premier weekend featuring the Classic Oaks and Derby for three-year olds and the Coronation Cup (Group 1) for four-year olds and upwards was underwritten just before the events by generous Investec. The company signed on for a multi-year sponsorship and was well rewarded with two days of exciting races.
"Superstar" Sea The Stars Ire (Cape Cross Ire-Urban Sea) is the first horse in 20 years to win both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. He follows Nashwan and Nijinsky in taking the double and is the highest-rated three-year old on Turf at 124.
He is trained by Ireland's Gentleman John Oxx and was ridden by the incomparable about-to-be-50 Michael Kinane.
Home-bred by Lady Bamford, Sariska (Pivotal) provided a brass-knuckle finish to the Oaks by beating Midday (Oasis Dream) by a head. Sariska's jockey literally knocked off the competition and rightly earned himself a 5-day ban.
The Coronation Cup provided more ruthless excitement with a devastating finish by Ryan Moore on Ask (Sadler's Wells USA) beating unlucky Youmzain Ire (Sinndar Ire) by a nose and last year's lovely Oaks' winner Look Here (Hernando Fr) by another nose. Moore also earned a 5-day ban for excessive use of the whip on Ask.
The weekend produced no Coolmore winners though O'Brien's team took an impressive 2-3-4-5 in the Derby.
Needless to say, Godolphin produced no winners either but Darley Stud wants to buy Sea The Stars. Most trainers are rearranging their fixtures to avoid running against him and he is 7-1 favourite for the Arc.

Sheikh Mohammed Confirmed--he wants the Guineas-Derby double winner Sea The Stars Ire to join his sire Cape Cross Ire at Darley when his racing career ends.
