Barshiba: British National Treasure

There are certain beloved, iconic horses and mares in Britain and Barshiba would no doubt be the favourite mare based on her talent, guts and resiliance.

Six-year-old Barshiba IRE (Barathea IRE), blind in one eye since an accident as a baby, won her second back-to-back Bet365.com Lancashire Oaks, 12f or a mile and a half on firm Turf, at Haydock Park.

She won by 3/4 lengths over 3.1 favourite Polly's Mark with Britain's leading female jockey, Hayley Turner, on board.

Just two weeks ago, she led the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot only to be overtaken by Harbinger and Duncan in the final furlongs.

Her trainer David Elsworth suggested that they might follow last year's plan and take her to the Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket which she won last year.

Elsworth trained legendary Persian Punch, who was also owned by Jeff Smith, and multiple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Desert Orchid.

He is Britain's expert keeper of its national treasures and Barshiba is one of today's greatest.
