Since winning the Group 1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket by a neck from Equiano FR (Acclamation) and the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, Ballydoyle's Starspangledbanner AUS (Choisir AUS) has taken a larger lead in the Cartier Older Horse and Cartier Sprinter categories.
He tops Juddmonte's Byword (Peintre Celebre USA) at 96 to 80 with Equiano at 72 in the older horse category.
He tops Equiano as sprinter by 96 to 72.
Given Starspangledbanner's jockey's reckless interference in the Darley July Cup losing only by a neck to Equiano and Equiano's victory in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, I am suprised that the latter is rated so poorly by the Cartier Jury.
Starspangledbanner is now fifth at 96 in the Cartier Horse of the Year list behind leader Canford Cliffs, Dick Turpin, Lope De Vega and Special Duty.
He could win all three categories for trainer Aiden O'Brien and Ballydoyle.
Currently, he is rated at 125 by the Racing Post for his Royal Ascot performance.
The vote up to July 15 was taken by an 18-member Cartier Jury of racing officials and journalists.
