Makfi Is Favourite For QE II Stakes At Ascot

Canford Cliffs IRE (Tagula IRE) was favourite with UK punters for Saturday's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot until he scoped poorly Wednesday after an excellent gallops' session.

This is a double blow to his trainer Richard Hannon who is competing with Sir Michael Stoute for top-earning trainer honours in 2010 with every pound counting towards victory.

Hannon and the British handicapper believe his three-year old is the the best miler in Europe despite Makfi (Dubawi IRE) beating him in the 2000 Guineas and the stellar record of Ballydoyle's four-year-old Rip Van Winkle IRE (Galileo IRE) as last year's leading male miler.

Mikel Delzangles, who continues as Makfi's trainer for the horse's new owners - the Al-Thani ruling family of Qatar, looked forward to besting CC again and now finds his horse betting favourite over his half brother Poet's Voice and Rip

The ground should be perfect with some overnight rain keeping the grass fresh and bouncy for good conditions.

The Day also features two high-calibre races for two-year olds.

The Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies Mile for two-year olds pits Godolphin's exciting White Moonstone (Dynaformer USA) against Hannon's Date With Destiny IRE, the only runner of the late George Washington IRE.
The Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes for colts and geldings has only five runners willing to tackle Britain's new wunderkind, Frankel (Galileo IRE), trained by Henry Cecil.
